How CartTally works

Five steps from household chaos to dinner sorted.

1. Set up your household rules

Allergies, dislikes, budget, household size, and weekly routine: set once, used every week.

2. Add what you want to use up

Quick pantry sweep: chicken breast, spinach, two carrots. CartTally plans around them.

3. Generate your weekly dinner plan

Dinners chosen around your rules, pantry items, budget target, and weekly schedule.

4. Shop from one clear list

Pantry-covered items removed, estimated prices shown, split into “you have” and “you need.”

5. Cook without the endless scrolling

Simple cook mode with ingredients, steps, and rule indicators. No more life-stories to scroll through.

What makes CartTally different?

CartTally connects your household rules, pantry, budget and weekly routine into one simple weekly dinner plan.

Rules-first planning

Allergies, dislikes, and preferences are part of the plan from the start.

Pantry-based meals

Use what you already have before buying more. Less food waste, save more money and help the environment.

Budget guidance

See an estimated shop total before you head to the supermarket. Less surprises at checkout.

Simple shop and cook

Turn the plan into a clear shopping list with one click, then cook from simple steps.

The useful bit of meal kits is the planning.

Meal kits are convenient, but not always flexible, budget-friendly, or pantry-aware. CartTally helps you plan your own supermarket shop around your household, your way: without the box, the packaging, or the fixed menu.

Meal kits

  • Fixed weekly menus
  • $12–$16 per serve
  • Can’t use what’s in your fridge
  • Limited allergy flexibility

CartTally

  • Plans around your household rules
  • Uses your budget and supermarket
  • Factors in what you already have
  • Full allergy and preference control

CartTally is currently in private alpha. Grocery prices are shown as estimates while we improve supermarket coverage. We’ll always be upfront about what’s directional vs. exact.

Frequently asked questions

Is CartTally a meal kit?

No. CartTally is a dinner system, not a delivery box. You shop at your own supermarket using your own plan and list.

Does CartTally buy groceries for me?

Not currently. CartTally helps you plan what to buy and estimates the cost, but you do the shop yourself (online or in-store).

Are grocery prices exact?

Prices are estimates based on available supermarket data. They’re useful for budgeting, but the checkout total may differ. We’re improving accuracy during alpha.

Can CartTally handle allergies and dislikes?

Absolutely. Food rules, allergies, intolerances, dislikes, and preferences are a core part of how plans are generated. Alpha users should still review meals as the system improves.

Which supermarkets are supported?

We’re starting with major New Zealand supermarkets and expanding coverage during alpha. You can tell us your main shopping brand when you join at first, and we'll work to expand this list over time.

Is CartTally free?

During private alpha, yes. We’ll share pricing details before any paid plan goes live, and early supporters will get founders’ pricing.

When can I try it?

We’re inviting early access users soon. Join the waitlist and we’ll be in touch when your spot opens for the public beta. We’re excited to get feedback from our earliest supporters.

Is this an AI recipe generator?

No. CartTally is a structured dinner system planner. It uses your household rules, pantry, budget, and schedule to build practical dinner plans from real recipes, not random recipe generators.
